Zap Data Hub – Resolve the ODBC driver error: 'Data source name not found and no default driver specified'

Fix “Data source name not found and no default driver specified” by ensuring the HandiSoft ODBC Driver is installed and correctly configured on the same machine as the Data Gateway

This error appears when Zap Data Hub cannot locate the required HandiSoft ODBC Driver.

Note: The driver must be installed on the same machine where the Data Gateway is installed, and it must contain the correct data path configuration.

Why this error occurs

The error:

Connection Failed: ERROR ODBC Driver Manager – Data source name not found and no default driver specified appears when:

  • The HandiSoft ODBC Driver is not installed

  • The ODBC driver is installed on a different machine than the Data Gateway

  • The ODBC System DSN is missing or misconfigured

  • The HandiSoft data path in the ODBC settings is incorrect

Verify the ODBC driver setup

1. Open the ODBC Data Sources tool

  1. On the Data Gateway server, open the Windows search bar

  2. Type ODBC

  3. Select ODBC Data Sources (32-bit)

2. Check for the HandiSoft System DSN

  1. Open the System DSN tab

  2. Confirm that a HandiSoft entry exists

    • If it is missing, the driver is not installed

3. Verify the configuration

  1. Select the HandiSoft DSN

  2. Click Configure

  3. Check that the data path points to the correct HandiSoft installation folder

  4. Update the path if required

Install the driver if missing

If the driver is not installed, follow these steps:

1. Run the installer on the HandiSoft server

  1. Go to the server where HandiSoft is physically installed

  2. Download the latest ODBC Driver installer here (provided by HandiSoft)

  3. Run ODBCDriver.exe

  4. Follow the on‑screen installation steps

  5. Select the HandiSoft installation directory when prompted

  6. Click Finish to complete the installation

2. Test the connection in Zap Data Hub

  1. Return to the HandiSoft connector page in Zap Data Hub

  2. Click Test connection

  3. You should now see a green tick, confirming the ODBC driver is detected

Next steps

If the error continues:

  • Confirm the Data Gateway service is running

  • Verify the ODBC driver was installed on the same server as the Data Gateway

  • Raise a support case and include:

    • A screenshot of the ODBC settings

    • The Test Connection result

    • Logs from the Data Gateway machine
